MANCHESTER UNITED flop Alexis Sanchez has turned down the chance to breathe life into his flagging career with Italian outfit Roma.
Manchester United were willing to pay a huge chunk of his £560,000-a-week wages to send him on loan to the Italian capital after the two clubs agreed to a loan deal with an option to buy.
Alexis Sanchez has struggled to make an impression at Old Trafford since his move from Arsenal 18 months ago and United have been trying to offload him all summer.
The Chilean international has been paid around £45million in wages by United since then and has scored just three Premier League goals, meaning each one has cost £15m.
And the Red Devils are hoping that he will attract more interest from other European sides before their summer transfer window slams shut at the start of next month.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer left him out of the squad that hammered Chelsea 4-0 in their Premier League opener last weekend.
Sanchez, 30, is short of fitness after returning to the club late for pre-season training because he had been playing at the Copa America with Chile.
But Solskjaer, at least publicly, remains confident Sanchez can rediscover the form of his Arsenal days.
“Alexis is such a professional and he comes in working every single day really hard and he wants to be a part of this,” said the Norwegian coach.
“These stories that he’s been put in the reserves?
“Of course he hasn’t, he’s part of our squad and he is a really good player.
“He has had three weeks now, so he’s a few weeks behind the rest but close to being part of it.
“We don’t have the biggest forward line in numbers so Alexis might end up playing a lot more games than you expect because we expect him to come good at this club, he’s quality.
